Colon Hydrotherapy: Further information

Colon hydrotherapy dates back to approximately 1500 BC, as mentioned in ancient medical texts such as the Ebers Papyrus and Susruta Samhita, which originated in Egyptian and Ayurvedic medicine.

Colon cleansing practices have existed in various forms for centuries. Modern colon hydrotherapy uses contemporary closed-system equipment and strict hygiene protocols designed to prioritise comfort, dignity, and safety.

Possible Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy

Many clients choose colon hydrotherapy as part of a broader digestive and wellbeing approach. Reported benefits may include:

  • Improved bowel regularity
  • Reduced feelings of bloating or abdominal heaviness
  • Support during periods of constipation or sluggish digestion
  • Increased awareness of digestive habits and hydration
  • A feeling of relaxation and wellbeing following treatment
  • Supportive care alongside nutritional and lifestyle changes

As with all complementary therapies, individual experiences vary and colon hydrotherapy is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Yes, as a member of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and the General Nautropathic Council (GNC) , some plans will cover Colonic Hydrotherapy and provide you with cash back upon production of an invoice. Please check with your Health Insurance Plan provider for coverage level.

Colonic hydrotherapy carried out in our Shepton Mallet clinic is a gentle treatment which involves the slow introduction of warm, filtered water into the bowel through a small tube called a speculum that is gently inserted about an inch and a half into the rectum.  The treatment uses a closed system with gentle water flow and abdominal massage. This means that there is no mess or smell, and that dignity is preserved throughout.

The water is introduced at a very low and carefully controlled pressure. This “fill and release” process is repeated several times.  The gentle flow of warm water, combined with abdominal massage, may help soften stool and encourage bowel emptying while supporting comfort throughout the treatment.

Colonics can be administered following hip and back surgery, but mobility must be sufficiently recovered to allow moving off the treatment couch. If you are considering Colon Hydrotherapy post-surgery, please send us an email
